Media Technology Essay

How has technology had an impact on the way large organisations create blockbuster films?

Disney is part of a large group of multi-media companies called 'The Big 6', this means they have power and lots of resources that smaller companies won't have. A blockbuster film is a film with a high budget and big stars feature in it.

Spectacle is what all the large film companies rely on, it encourages families to go to the cinema to watch a film, it makes it seem like seeing the film on the big screen with surround sound will make the movie more enjoyable to watch. This means that that the company such as Disney will make more profit out of it.

Disney have used digitisation in their film production; films used to be put on a strip of 24 films per seconds to make it look continuous, by making films digital it allows for films to look continuous, allow for different environment and backgrounds to be used as well as being able to cut parts of the film out. By digitising films, the films can be used on more viewing platforms such as Netflix, Sky or Amazon. The next element used in production is Chroma capture, which is the use of green or blue screens. By using a green or blue screen, new backgrounds can be used that are fully made by use of imagination. An example of Chroma capture use is The Jungle Book, the sets and backgrounds for this film were al pre designed and imagined before the film even started production, they were then out onto a blue screen and filming begun. Performance capture is a relatively new technological element used within film production, it is when facial expressions and movements are tracked. The impact of these highly technological elements on large organisations means is that they can produce higher quality work but it does cost more.

Pre-visualization is when the director and producers will visualize how scenes are going to be done, the camera moves, motion captured performances and the set designs. Technology within a large company allows for more advanced planning and designing and a wider range of high quality decisions.

IMAX is a type of filming that is expensive and requires a very skilled person when filming. IMAX means image maximum and is a 70mm motion picture. When viewing the film in the cinema, it is on a bigger screen and has a better viewing quality, making it cost more to view and make. This allows for the large companies such as Disney who have a high budget to use this quality of filming. When the film is viewed on a 4K TV, the increased quality will make more people pay to watch the film and enjoy it. The Jungle Book made a profit of $103,261,464 in the first opening weekend of the film being in the IMAX cinema.

CGI (computer generated image) is when someone alters an image or a video using the computer either to add detail or add special effects. A large company such as Disney can spend more money in getting the best results of the images or videos. This will increase how many people come to the cinema to watch the movie as well because of the big screen and the special effects that get used.

MPC is the Motion Picture Company who have specialised skills in concept design, pre-visulisation shoot supervision, 2D compositing, 3D/CG effects, animation, motion design, software development, mixed reality and experiential production, live action production and colour grading for advertising.

Films such as The Jungle Book who had a £175 million budget could afford to reach out to specialised companies in order to make a very high quality film. In this case, MPC was used to create the set designs and all the visual effects. Sethi who is one of the actors in The Jungle Book, filmed against a green screen, there would be small pieces of then set that he would have to interact with and pretend were the real thing such as a log.

Media Language in the Jungle Book

Media Language in the Jungle Book In the 2016 trailer of the Jungle Book has been created using computers and CGI as well as special effects making it look verisimilitude . The animals and background images have been made to look incredibly realistic, this then attracts attention to how the movie looks so real when really it’s a movie containing talking animals. In comparison the 1967 version of the Jungle Book has been made as a cartoon with no special computers or technology, the backgrounds are watercolour and the animals are simple animations. This doesn’t make the movie realistic and is more attractive to the younger audience. Dramatic non-diegetic music has been used throughout the trailer to give the audience a small hint that the movie is going to be really dramatic and have lots of twists and turns. Then there is the diegetic sound of Scarlet Johansson talking as the snake, which is calm and juxtaposes the dramatic movie but then towards the end of the movie you act...

Downton Abbey analysis

At 0:47 the contrast in costumes shows the difference between the rich and the poor. The rich people are wearing expensive, traditionally high class outfits (suits) and the lower class are wearing work outfits for example the servants (aprons and hats) and the paper boy. This shows a direct contrast between the two classes.  There is high key lighting in the upper class peoples section of the house showing that they are more powerful because they are in a brightly lit area. Low key lighting is used in the areas of the house such as the kitchen where the servants work and live because traditionally they would be in the bottom floor of the house.  At 0:49, the man looks down on the paper boy as he is late and snatches the paper from him.  At 1:09 there is a close up shot of the man reading the newspaper and you can see the facial expression but there is no clue on what he is reading.  At 1:17 you can see the class difference as the lower class workers have to i...
